Set Design - United World College
Set Design in School Productions
Set design is an integral component of any theatrical production, and this is no different for school plays and musicals. It's the canvas upon which the story is painted, providing context, mood, and support for the actors' performances. At the United World College, Las Vegas NM the set design work is not just a background task; it's a collaborative and educational experience that involves students, teachers, and sometimes even the community. That's where I come in! I was given the task of building life size books and designing interior scenes for The Baker and his wife and Jack and his mother. It was a lot of fun!

Collaboration is Key
One of the most beautiful aspects of set design is the emphasis on collaboration. Students from different grades and classes come together to share ideas and work towards a common goal. It's a fantastic way for students to learn from each other and see the value in different skill sets. I learnt a lot also and really enjoyed the collaboration side of things.

Learning Through Doing
Set design is not only about drawing and building. It's about problem-solving and innovation. Alongside the students at the United World College we were encouraged to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to design challenges. Whether it's figuring out how to create a convincing backdrop with limited resources or how to change scenes quickly during a performance, students develop critical thinking skills that are applicable beyond the stage.

Graduation Day
After a busy year of learning, creating and having fun the students all gather for graduation day. Luckily these ladies are back for another year and I disnt have to say godbye just yet. I made some great friends and would do it all again if the opportunity presented itself.

Final Thoughts
Set design is more than just a backdrop for a play; it's a comprehensive educational journey that equips students with practical skills, fosters creativity, and builds community. It's a testament to the power of collaboration and the magic that can be created when different talents come together. The next time you attend a United World College, Las Vegas NM production, take a moment to appreciate the world that has been meticulously crafted on stage – it's the product of hard work, vision, and a lot of heart.
