Arte de Descartes XXIV - Opening in Taos Sept 21st 4-8pm

Arte de Descartes XXIV, the 24th annual juried recycled art show, opens at the Stables Gallery on Saturday, September 21, from 4-8 pm. The show will feature over 50 artists working with cast-off materials and scrap of all kinds. There will be live music by Ras Güero and refreshments. This exhibition brings people together to experience the inventiveness of artists thinking outside the box. The show will be open daily through September 29, from 10 am – 6 pm.

I entered two pieces into the show. I’ve wanted to participate since I first heard about it a few years ago, shortly before leaving Taos and moving to Las Vegas, NM. It’s been a challenging few years, between the death of my mother and the long, arduous process of renovating my building and studio. But this year, I managed to finish two pieces for submission.

Unfortunately, the piece featured in the main image of this blog post, titled Mother, didn’t make it. It consists of found wood, old metal screws, cans, and flowers gathered from my garden.

The second piece, titled 1 Gallon Lovers Mess, was selected for the show. Curiously, I thought Mother would be the one chosen, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Having seen some of the incredible recycled art on display, I feel humbled and grateful that even one of my pieces was accepted.

You can see a section of 1 Gallon Lovers Mess below. It will be displayed on the beautiful white walls of the Stables Gallery in Taos, and I’ll get better shots of it at the opening. I hope to see you there.
